Hanshi Lemuel Stroud
If you’ve been attending any type of martial arts event, chances are you have heard of Hanshi Lemuel Stroud. Known to many as “Shihan,” he’s a 10th dan in the Hakko-Ryu jujitsu family and has been training for more than 40 years. He was a long time member of the board of directors of USA National Karate-Do Federation, and has served as a referee on the national level. Not only is he a black belt, he’s also a director of the National Martial Arts Association and the aforementioned jujitsu family. In addition to his responsibilities as a black belt, Shihan, and NMA director, he’s also an owner of Stroud’s School of Martial Arts.
The first Virginia Martial Arts Center was located in Chesapeake in the early 1980s, and moved to a larger facility in the Portsmouth suburbs in the mid-’80s. Today, the Center is still active with some of the original instructors in tow, including Sensei Valorie Clinkscales and her longtime student, Scott Kennedy. Despite its modest success, it’s still one of the most diverse and popular martial arts organizations in the region, with students of all ages and interests. One of its most notable accomplishments is its nimble and effective staff of black belts and instructors. Simon Rhee
Master Simon Rhee is one of the world’s most famous and well-respected martial artists. He has earned a 7th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a 4th degree black belt in Hap Ki Do. Besides that, he holds a fifth degree black belt in Judo.
Master Rhee has received a variety of awards including Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Taurus World Stunt Award. He has also acted as a fight choreographer. His prestigious titles include Tournament Grand Champion, World TKD Kukkiwon certified 7th degree black belt, and the past president of the International Stunt Association.
When he was young, Master Rhee contracted meningitis. Nevertheless, he was determined to continue his martial arts training. Eventually, he moved to Seoul, Korea, and began studying Martial Arts. At that time, he was enrolled in Tae Kwon Do classes to build his physical strength.
Among his many accomplishments, Master Rhee was the first taekwondo instructor to teach in the United States. He has taught more than 350 U.S. senators and hundreds of congressmen. A former speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, is another of his students.

Fukuda has published a book for women, Born for the Mat. As a result, he is the highest-ranking female practitioner in the world.
Yoshihiro “Yosh” Uchida is a judo instructor at San Jose State University. He has been head judo coach there for over 60 years. Besides coaching the Spartans, he has been instrumental in the development of the judo program at SJSU.
He served as team coach at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He also represented the United States at the International Judo Federation meeting in Paris in 1961. After World War II, he was a medical technician. During that time, he also bought a laboratory in San Jose.
When he was 13 years old, he became a judo student of Arthur Lee. In his teens, he had become one of the top judo players in the U.S., and he was known as an energetic instructor.
Eventually, he became the head judo instructor at Budokwai. Throughout his career, he was an Olympic judo competitor and a member of the British Judo Association. At age 18, he won a silver medal in the 1965 European Championships.
