“Free Guy” became available to stream through video-on-demand (VOD) retailers on September 28. That’s just 45 days after the movie’s theatrical release. Right now, you can purchase the film for $20 or rent it for $6 on Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV, and Microsoft Movies.

In “Free Guy,” Ryan Reynolds is a non-player character (NPC) in a video game, known simply as Guy, who becomes increasingly self-aware. With the help of the mysterious Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer), Guy tries to save his virtual world before it’s deleted by a corrupt developer. The movie includes multiple cameos from popular video game streamers like Ninja and Pokimane.

According to Deadline, “Free Guy” earned over $300 million worldwide during its initial theatrical release. Beyond box office success, “Free Guy” was favorably received by critics. The movie holds an “80% Certified Fresh” rating on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.

Is ‘Free Guy’ coming to Disney Plus?

“Free Guy” is available to stream on Disney Plus in select regions like Australia and the UK, but a US premiere date has not been announced.

Though the movie is owned by Disney, it started development at 20th Century Fox. Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, but due to streaming agreements made before the purchase, Variety suggests that “Free Guy” could actually be available on HBO Max before it comes to Disney Plus in the US.

While “Free Guy” hasn’t been confirmed for Disney Plus in the US, multiple new movies and series are being added to the platform on November 12 as part of Disney Plus Day. The most anticipated release is Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings,” which will become available to all subscribers for no additional cost.
