In the United States, a bachelor’s degree is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities after completion of a course of study.
A bachelor’s degree is differentiated from a master’s degree in that it is typically three to four years long and requires full-time enrollment. Some degrees, such as the Bachelor of Medicine and the Bachelor of Engineering, may take five or more years to complete.

A bachelor's degree is a higher education credential awarded to undergraduate students who have successfully completed at least three years of study in an academic or professional field. It is usually the first degree a student earns and often marks the beginning of a long line of educational accolades.
A hefty number of universities across the world award such degrees. The most common is the Bachelor of Arts, although many institutions now offer a number of other majors as well. These include the bachelor of science, or BSc, and the Bachelor of Music, or BMS. In the United States, the bachelor of business administration (BBA) is a popular choice for students pursuing careers in management and finance.
It is also the most commonly offered bachelor's degree, as it is less expensive than a baccalaureate and has fewer restrictions on study options. It is generally a four-year degree with a required internship or a work-study component and a plethora of student services, such as libraries, computer labs and dining halls.
In fact, it is one of the most difficult degrees to complete and requires a substantial amount of dedication and time investment. A good bachelor's degree may take a student a lifetime to complete, but it is a worthwhile endeavor.
In a few instances, the aforementioned sexiest degree is actually a postgraduate diploma, known as a master’s or doctorate. This is a rare and prestigious accomplishment and can only be achieved after an extensive amount of research and effort. Nevertheless, the bachelor's degree still remains the gold standard for many students around the world.
It is a foundational degree
If your son or daughter is considering a university degree but isn’t sure if it’s right for them, then they may be interested in taking a Foundation Degree. These are designed in partnership between universities, colleges and employers and give students the academic qualifications that are needed to further their career – combined with the practical skills and knowledge that are valued by industry.
A Foundation degree combines vocational study with academic study and is the equivalent of two thirds of an honours bachelor’s degree, as well as a Higher National Diploma (HND) and a Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE). These courses are often delivered through local Further Education colleges, so you can be flexible about your employee’s study pattern, making it possible to fit these courses into their work-based lifestyle.
Many people choose to study Foundation degrees part time while they are in work to gain more experience and help them develop their skills. This means they can study and earn a little at the same time, which will often pay off more than if they had taken a full time bachelor’s degree.
In the United States, a bachelor’s degree is typically awarded by colleges and universities for completion of a course of study that takes about five years. The most common type of bachelor’s degree is the Bachelor of Arts (BA). Some institutions offer other bachelor’s degrees, such as the Bachelor of Science (BSc), or the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA).
Most of these bachelor’s degrees require completion of a set number of subjects in the major area of study and a variety of liberal or general studies requirements. They may also require the completion of particular honours seminars, independent research at a higher level than usually required or a written thesis in a certain field of study.
The majority of bachelor’s degrees in the United States are designated with Latin honours, such as cum laude (“with honor/praise”) and magna laude (“with great honor/praise”), but there are other forms, such as summa laude (“with highest honor/praise”) or maxima laude (“with maximum honor/praise”). These notations of honours are often more meaningful to the student than the degree itself and reflect the individual’s personal achievement and contribution to the college and community, rather than the subject area.
It is a stepping stone
In a lot of ways, the bachelor's degree is like a stepping stone. It allows you to take a big step in your life, and it also gives you the freedom to pursue something else later.
A stepping stone can be anything that helps you to move in the right direction. It could be something as simple as getting a job that provides you with the financial support to pursue your dream career, or it could be a new role that allows you to explore other areas in your life.
For example, if you are interested in becoming a doctor, a stepping stone may be a community college degree that enables you to work in the medical field while you go to school for your medical degree. This will give you the experience and training that you need to be able to make an impact on the health of others.
Another stepping stone that people often use to reach their goals is a part-time job. These positions often provide more freedom to explore the different areas of your passions, and they can give you the time to focus on them in your spare time.
The word stepping stone is also used in relation to marriages. Many couples believe that it is only through a stepping stone relationship that they can truly love one another. The stepping stone relationship is characterized by unconditional love, commitment, and emotional support.
In America, many students enter university at a young age to gain the independence and responsibility that they need to become full adults. The stepping stone of university is sometimes called the “first phase” of adulthood, but for some students, this is not true.
However, the stepping stone concept is a very important one. It allows you to gain the skills that you need to be successful in a wide range of careers and to have the freedom to pursue your own interests. It can also help you to avoid the debt that so many people incur when they graduate from a four-year college.
It is a preparation
A bachelor’s degree (from Middle Latin baccalaureus; Modern Latin baccalaureatus) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study lasting three to six years. It is also sometimes referred to as a “second degree” after a first degree, and is a prerequisite for further courses such as a master’s or a doctorate.
A university bachelor’s degree usually consists of a set of general education requirements and a major concentration that is designed to be a coherent and focused program of study. Students are assigned a faculty advisor, usually in the intended field of study, who helps them develop a plan of study and use the general education requirements to support that major.
In the United States, a bachelor’s degree is typically completed in four years, although it may take five or more. In some countries, however, a bachelor’s degree can be completed in as little as three years. In some cases, such as for those who want to pursue a career in the sciences or engineering, the degree is completed more rapidly than this.
Most bachelor’s degrees are now awarded with Latin honours, in ascending order of cum laude (“with honor”), magna cum laude (“with great honor”), summa cum laude (“with highest honor”) and maxima cum laude (“with maximal honor”); some programs require a higher grade point average than others.
Many countries have a number of different types of bachelor’s degrees, and some are more academically-oriented than others. For example, the bachelor’s degree in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is called a “Bachelor of Arts” (BA), while the same qualification is known as a “Bachelor of Science” (BSc).
In Germany, however, the traditional degree of diplom was abolished by educational reforms undertaken in 1820 and replaced by the Abitur degree. In 1998, the German government reintroduced the bachelor’s degree in accordance with the European Bologna process.
There are also “professional bachelor’s” in some fields, requiring an additional 3 to 4+1/2 years of combined theoretical and practical study at a professional university college or business academy (Danish: professionshojskole). These professional bachelor’s do not grant access to university master’s programmes.
