How to Take Care of Your Eyes Post-LASIK: Water Exposure?

If patients do not keep water, soap, shampoo, and/or similar cleaning agents out of their eyes for the first 7 days after surgery, they risk:

  • When using soap, water, shampoo, or other similar items in the eyes, you run the danger of infection.
  • Feelings of stinging and irritation
  • Rubbing your eyes and wrinkling the corneal flap created during LASIK eye surgery is a bad idea.
  • Exacerbate any dry eye symptoms by accident/begin to experience dry eye symptoms
  • Other Water Exposure & Swimming LASIK Aftercare

Patients want to know when they can go back to the pool, hot tub, ocean, or lake after laser eye surgery, especially during the summer months. To promote optimal LASIK aftercare and healing, we suggest our LASIK eye surgery patients wait 14 days before resuming these activities.

Irritation, redness, and corneal tissue infection are all possible following LASIK eye surgery due to the chemicals in chlorinated water and the particles found in salt and freshwater lakes. Interactions with these bodies of water can cause post-operative harm or impede the healing process.

Returning to Daily Activities After LASIK

Patients quickly regain their ability to perform daily activities the day following LASIK eye surgery, but it’s crucial to realize that, while you won’t feel any discomfort, your corneal tissue will take time to repair.

  1. Applying Eye Creams and Makeup: After LASIK, it’s been a week.

Apply any eye makeup, such as eye cream, eyeliner (including kajal or kohl eyeliner), mascara, or eye shadow, 7 days following LASIK eye surgery. When applying other facial cosmetics, avoid rubbing near your eyes to avoid getting powders like toners, foundations, or blush into your eyes. Purchasing new eye makeup to wear following your LASIK procedure is generally a smart choice since this will reduce the chance of infection.

When removing your makeup after LASIK, use the utmost caution. When removing eye makeup, be careful not to apply too much power or rub too hard, since this can destroy the flap that was made.

  1. Workout for one to two weeks

2 days following your LASIK eye surgery, you can begin exercising at home or outside.

Because of the increased risk of infection, our surgeons recommend avoiding public gyms for 5 days after your LASIK eye surgery.

Swimming and other workouts in chlorinated, salt, or freshwater environments should be avoided for at least two weeks.

  1. Work and Computer Use: One Day

After LASIK eye surgery, the vast majority of patients can return to work the same day. Patients should buy preservative-free lubricating drops over-the-counter in individual vials that will be used for several weeks during the LASIK post-op phase, according to Providence Eye.

When you return to work, make sure you stay up with your lubricating drops, both prescribed and over-the-counter. Following drop guidelines will help you heal faster, feel more comfortable, and work more productively after surgery.

If your profession requires you to use a computer frequently, consider blinking more regularly. Studies show that when using a computer, people blink half as often as they normally do.

If your eyes are dry or your eyesight is hazy, you can also increase your use of lubricating drops. Even if your eyes may not feel dry, they can be. It’s also critical for you to switch your concentration every 20 minutes.

We recommend that you set a reminder on your calendar to stand up and focus for 30 seconds to one minute on something that is further away. This will help your eyes gradually acclimate to heavy computer screen use, and you can use your over-the-counter preservative-free lubricating drops to keep your eyes lubricated throughout the day.
